One of the most useful applications of technology is communication, gone are the days of attaching your message to a carrier pigeon. Now we have E-mail, Fax, Instant Messaging, Social networking and of course, the Mobile Phone.

As your reading this it is likely there is at least 1 mobile phone within 10 metres of where you are sitting, you have probably used one today as well. In fact in several countries there are more mobile phones than people including the UK

Today I am going to show you how mobile phones have evolved

The 80s The first generation

Often referred to as the decade of greed reflecting the economic and social climate in the UK and USA. However the 1980s are also considered to be the transition between the industrial and information ages.

Motorola DynaTAC

The first commercially available handheld mobile phone was the Motorola DynaTAC which was approved in 1983.

Weighing in at an outstanding 794 grams and measuring 10 inches tall, the DynaTAC was a true trooper. It had the standard 12 button layout we see on todays mobile phones along with 9 additional keys-

Rcl (Recall), Clr (Clear), Snd (Send), Sto (Store), Fcn (Function), End (End), Pwr (Power), Lock (Lock), Vol (Volume)

Motorola have announced that they will release a 21st anniversary edition of the phone built to the original specification with modern day components.

It did have one advantage though, if someone tried to mug you, you could club them over the head with it and make your get away.

Nokia 100

The first handset from Nokias Original series of handsets was designed especially for the growing consumer market. From the ground up it was designed to be easy to use by mobile phone virgins, a concept that Nokia is renowned for worldwide.

Nokias market research at the time revealed buyers were purchasing handsets for security reasons. Based on this 3 special keys were integrated, the first a red number 9 that was programmed to dial emergency services. The second was represented by an envelope to call voice mail systems and the third could be programmed to user preference.

The handset weighed a mere 340 grams and also included the keyguard system which protected against calls being made accidentally.

The 90s The Second Generation

The 90s marked the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the cold war; it also marked the dot com boom and rise of the internet. Economic growth sat hand in hand with technological development.

Motorola StarTAC

This was the first phone to appear in the flip format. Its generally agreed this was inspired by the original Star Trek communicator; The phone was released in January 1996 and in 2005 PC World Magazine ranked it at number 6 in The 50 Greatest Gadgets Of The Past 50 Years

It was also the first phone to feature the vibrating alert feature dubbed Vibracall, at the time only Motorola handsets could make use of this feature as they held the patent. Back in the day it was also considered the smallest (94 mm x 55 mm x 19 mm) and lightest (94 grams) mobile phone available, it even made cameo appearances in films such as 8mm staring Nicolas Cage.

Nokia 5110

The Nokia 5110 was released to the public in 1998 and very quickly became the most popular mobile phone in the world. It was rugged, had excellent battery life and of course was one of the first phones to feature the game snake.

One of the main features that set the Nokia 5110 apart from the competition was Nokias Express on fascias. For the first time users could customise exactly how their phone looked, people could create custom fascias for their mobile phones allowing them to stand out from the crowd.

Siemens S10

The Siemens S10 was the first to feature a colour screen; it marked a revolution in mobile phone history. It was released to the general public in 1998 and to celebrate/show off their achievement, Siemens included an Easter egg to display a Palm Tree Image.

Although this was the first mobile phone to feature a colour screen, demand for the handset was fairly low. The colours looked washed out and the screens suffered from vertical ghosting. A feature I quite like about the phone, is the ability to assign a colour to a contact in your phonebook, similar to how you can assign colours to files on modern day apple macs.

Nokia 3210

The Nokia 3210 was a massively popular handset, initially launched in 1999. It had a winning combination of cutting edge features. It was the first mobile phone to have an internal antenna and unlike the Nokia 5110, you could replace both the front and back covers of the phone.

For the first time in the mobile phone industry an advertising campaign was launched for the handset aimed predominantly at young people. The inclusion of 3 games, changeable fascias, customisable ringtones and aggressive pricing led to the handsets huge popularity with those aged 15-25.

The 2000s Third Generation

The start of 2000 went down in history with the worlds biggest excuse to get drunk, the new millennium. The 2000s have sparked escalation of social issues from the 90s such as healthcare, human rights, gender equality, homosexuality, body image and terrorism. But what has it done for technology?

Samsung SGH-M100

2000 was the year that re-defined digital convergence, combining multiple devices into one in the name of convenience. Samsung had created an award winning combination of a mobile phone with an integrated MP3 Player.

It had 32MB of integrated memory, and connected to your PC with a parallel interface. Included with the handset was an inline remote allowing complete control of your music, there was also a headset included that doubled up as a personal handsfree.

J-SH04 Sharp

The first commercially available camera phone was released to the Asian market in 2000. The phone boasted a 110,000 pixel camera using an integrated CCD sensor and a glorious 256 colour screen to display your captured moments.

There was also a miniature mobile colour printer available so you could make hard copies of your photos. Its generally thought that the camera phone and mobile printer was inspired by the Purikura photo booths that could be found scattered around Tokyo at the time.

Ericsson T68

Released in time for Christmas 2001, the T68 had the strongest set of features ever seen on a mobile phone and managed to do so in style while remaining lightweight and compact (100 mm x 48 mm x 20 mm 84 grams).

Although not the first phone to feature Bluetooth (this was the Ericsson T36 in 2000) it was the first that penetrated the market and became widespread. It also featured Infrared, GPRS, TriBand, WAP, SMS, Predictive Text, EMS, WAP, Colour screen, Customisable ring tones, Custom wallpapers, Screensavers and a Photo phonebook. This phone set the standards for those to come.

Motorola V3/RAZR

This handset had the power to make the world spin the opposite direction on it axis. It was released into the wild in 2004, and possibly one of the most distinct handsets of all time due to its looks and size. It was initially considered as an exclusive fashion phone.

Like its great granddad the Motorola StarTAC, the V3 managed to make it into PCworlds The 50 Greatest Gadgets Of The Past 50 Years at the number 12 spot.

The handset was just 13mm thick (53 mm x 98 mm x 13 mm) and weighed just 99 grams. In less than a year of its release it was reported that the RAZR V3 was the most popular clamshell handset available, and by July 2006 Motorola had shipped 50 million units.

Nokia N95

The N95 does it all. Gone are the days of carrying a mobile phone, An MP3 Player, A GPS unit in your car, A PDA/Laptop, A video camera or a digital camera. One single device than can do it all was released to the public in March 2007.

The handset packs a 5 megapixel camera with carl zeiss optics, Video recording at 640×480, WiFi, Quad Band, Integrated GPS and an MP3 player. Even though by todays standards it is considered heavy at 120 grams and quite large in size (99x53x20 mm) the handset shot to the number one spot in its first week of release. This was mainly due to the huge amount of anticipation for the handset.

After that, people are left wondering what is next? Is it possible to make a mobile phone any better than this? The answer is yes, and the answer begins with A.

The Future – Fourth Generation

Apple iPhone

Apple are notorious for the way they market their products, they have built up hype over months if not years for this product. They are very secret with what they do, and the public piece patents together to work out Apples new product. In fact, over 200 patents are related to the technology behind the iPhone.

The iPhones features include those of a camera phone, a multimedia player, mobile phone and internet services such as web browsing and E-mail. All of this is controlled by a massive 3.5 inch touchscreen interface. It is available with 8GB or 16GB of storage and apple are trying to capture 1% of the entire mobile phone market within its first year of launch, thats 10 million units.

Already Apple are to release a revised model of the Apple iPhone, the iPhone 3G, currently penned for release mid July. It includes new features such as 3G data transmission and built in GPS allowing you to literally find the nearest hotel, train station, pub no matter where you are.

There have been scores of songs about women, from Waltzing Matilda to Sting’s classic Roxanne. There have been scads of songs about cars, from Surrey with the Fringe on Top to the Beach Boys’ Little Deuce Coupe. There have even been songs about animals. Everything from the Old Gray Mare Ain’t What She Used to Be to Me and You and a Dog named Blue.

But how many songs are there about household appliances? Not many, unless you count the telephone.

The telephone has been immortalized in songs by bluesmen, torch singers, rap stars and pop divas. It totally makes sense. Alexander Graham Bell’s instrument is musical by its very nature. The first prototype phone rang with a cacophony of bells and chimes. Today, people download a favorite Blacked-eyed Pea Grammy number for their personal ringtone. With the advent of the push button phone, telephone numbers actually beeped a 7 digit tune. My grandmother’s phone number was, oddly enough, Mary had a Little Lamb. No joke.

So let’s pause a beat and do our own musical tour of classic phone tunes.

The Blues

Let’s start at the beginning, down in the bayou. There, Mississippi Fred McDowell wrote a mournful song that has been covered by everyone from the Rolling Stones to Randy Travis. Jesus is on the Mainline. The song dates back to a time when people shared party lines and telephone eavesdropping was the closest thing a lonely heart had to an Internet chat room. Jesus in the song famously is on the “mainline.” No waiting required. Call him up and tell him what you want. That quick. That easy.

Swing.

Moving into the war years, Glen Miller and his Orchestra lit up the 40’s with a swinging big band number about a phone number. Pennsylvania 6-5000. Back in the day when phone numbers still had letters. Nostalgic, huh?

Rockabilly

Phasing into the 1960’s, Chuck Berry wrote a song that rose to the top of the charts about a tortured soul playing phone tag with a six-year-old. The lyrical lament was sung by Johnny Rivers. “Long distance information, give me Memphis, Tennessee…Marie is only six years old, information please, try and put her through to me in Memphis, Tennessee.” You want to cry, right?

Top 40

In the 70’s, Blondie’s Debra Harry beckoned us to call her anytime day or night. Operators are standing by. A decade before, British pop singer Petula Clark delivered the same siren call. “Maybe it’s late,” her song goes “but just call me. Call me and I’ll be around.”

Classic Rock

Bands like Steely Dan warned Rikki not to lose that number. And Glen Campbell reminded us that Wichita Lineman was still on the line. When is that guy gonna get off? The rest of us need to make a call.

Comedy

The phone was even featured in many comedy albums. Most notably, comedian Bob Newhart launched his career with an album that featured a one-sided phone call between himself and Sir Walter Raleigh. A decade later, novelty songstress Meri Wilson sang a bawdy ditty called Telephone Man, full of more double entendres than an Irish limerick.

Country

These days, country artist Toby Keith sings about a trip to Mexico, where his time is neatly divided between Tequila and telephone calls.

Indie

Indie band Lemon Sun continues the trend asking the musical question Telephone, are You Alive? That’s pretty much the extent of the lyrics. Very post-modern. Very deep.

R&B

Today, pop divas Beyonce and Lady Gaga tag team a tune called simply, Telephone. Lady Gaga explains the deeper meaning, “That’s my fear – that the phones ringing and my heads ringing. Whether it’s a telephone or it’s just the thoughts in your head, that’s another fear.” Lady Gaga is afraid of telephones. Who knew? And hey, would Beyonce please answer her head! It’s about to ring off her shoulders.

So the next time you use your phone, show a little respect. After all, when was the last time someone wrote a song about you?

Jets, an anti-Bush dark pop/rock anti-war song by Mick Star which combines actual Bush speeches with the music and song lyrics in an interesting and poignant way, has been banned on American radio as a result of White House tactics to hold back funding from private, public and college radio stations across America that play Jets.

Record producers, record companies and rock bands that are currently touring America have been ordered to honor the White House blacklisting of Mick Star and Jets or they will be placed on the same Banned on America radio blacklist. With the help of Clear Channel and other American owned and Republican Party run radio station monoliths, these rovian tactics have proven effective. The American music community has turned a deaf ear to the most dramatic anti-Bush pop/rock song ever written and produced by an American citizen.

Why is the White House afraid of Jets? Mick Star, a recluse rock poet says it’s rather simple. Jets features George Bush himself declaring victory, taunting the world and committing other people’s money and lives to his arrogantly blind vision. Mick Star says Jets is a song that wrote itself.

As recluse rock poets go, Mick Star has little money. But Mick Star has a passion for the truth and Mick Star has a lap top computer. Mick Star travels the internet and he has taken Jets to Canada, England, Europe and South America knowing the truth will eventually override the Rovian grip of American radio. Jets is a song about the Jets that land at Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Delaware, USA, bearing the dead American soldiers from Iraq. The White House maintains a rovian grip on any and all press releases from Dover. Mick Star and Jets will break the rovian grip on America’s conscious.

Now that the death toll of American soldiers in Iraq has surpassed 3000, and there is talk of increased American troop presence in Iraq, there is renewed interest in the song Jets. While Mick Star continues to promote all of his music in the Philadelphia underground music circuit, Jets is the single song that Star believes will launch his career from an obscure Philadelphia-based writer to eventual stardom as the American public becomes increasingly dismayed by the Bush administration and its Iraq policies.

“If there’s some way that my simple little song gets somebody to listen, then I’ve done my job,” said Star. “That’s worth more to me than any amount of record sales.”

Jets is not the first of Mick Star’s hits. His life can be divided into four primary chapters that begin with “Songs from the Highfield,” then moves on to “The Boston University Years,” “iving with Ann Marie in Philadelphia,” and “Futures Passing.” Clearly an artist with the talent and conviction of Mick Star will continue to rock the American underground music scene.

Gulliver’s Travels is bad. And I mean, really bad. That salient point is the only way I can quickly get across my thoughts and feelings on this utter train-wreck of a motion picture. It is without wit, without irony, without innovation and without thought or feeling for anyone silly enough to pay cash money to see it. More notably however, it’s without laughs. The kids in the screening I caught will testify to that. I’m not making this up- many of them laughed at the trailers before the film, for coming attractions like Gnomeo and Juliet and Yogi Bear, and at the Ice Age short that played before the main feature. For the entire duration of the main attraction, the whole cinema was deathly silent. You’ll have more fun reading about Jonathan Swift’s descent into madness on Wikipedia is than watching this film.

But what’s wrong with it specifically? Well, simply put, it’s Gulliver’s Travels a la Dreamworks. I have been harsh on Dreamworks in the past, but I am speaking literally here- one of the screenwriters worked on the first two Shrek films and the director is Rob Letterman, who made a decent job of last year’s Monsters vs. Aliens. But think of everything that comes with a bad Dreamworks film. Inane pop culture references, repurposed but no less blatant product placement, unfunny jokes that aim no higher than the shins of the lowest common denominator, and most annoyingly in this case, Jack Black.

As a rule, I generally like Jack Black, no matter how much of a pounding he took in my estimation after A Clockwork Orange style consumption of that Orange advert for this film before each and every one of the 40 films I’ve seen in the cinema since August. The trouble is, his repetitive schtick can get sort of irksome, especially when you cast him as a character as flagrantly abominable as this film’s rendition of Gulliver. People say he plays himself, but I can’t quite believe the image of Jack Black in films is anything close to the man himself. Because otherwise no one would be able to stand working with him.

Towering over the cast of Liliputians as he does, there’s a fair argument to be made that Black is acting in a different film to them, added in afterwards through the magic of green screens. Supporting players like Billy Connolly and Jason Segel and Emily Blunt and Catherine Tate and… well, most of the little people are better than films like this. Only James Corden seems on the same wavelength as Black, with the consequence that you actually root for Chris O’Dowd as the film’s villain as he calls out Gulliver’s every action for the bullshit that it really is.

It’s even more of a wasted opportunity when you consider that there are no prominent grown-up adaptations of Swift’s novel, which contains more invention and intelligence than anyone bothered with on this version. Nothing about it shows an understanding of the potential of the source material. Too often, themes of corruption and war are glossed over by the need for apparently box-ticking sequences involving Jack Black playing Guitar Hero with little people, or pretending that Star Wars is the story of his life (and even that idea has been done elsewhere), or fighting a Transformer, or having a fucking song and dance number.

And so its lack of irony actually becomes something quite interesting. Look at that supporting cast again- they’re all English, except for Jason Segel who makes a good stab at an English accent. Along with his rambunctious nature and ego issues, Black’s Gulliver brings with him the worst parts of American culture. To get political for a moment in a vain effort to reclaim the original text’s perspective, is it possible that with David Cameron installed in government with the aid of News International, Murdoch subsidiary 20th Century Fox sees Britain as an island of little people who gratefully take what we’re spoon-fed via cultural imperialism? As a commentary on hegemony, it could be quite fascinating. However, it’s supposed to be Night At The Museum, and it’s actually a big pile of shite.

If this version of Gulliver’s Travels hadn’t been made, someone would have made it up as a joke. Indeed, I know many people who were initially confused by the Orange adverts for this film, believing it to be a joke trailer in the vein of the company’s previous campaigns about Danny Glover’s Dial Hard or Sean Astin’s Lord of the Ringtones. The trouble is, it does exist, and it’s hard to find anything funny about this film’s existence. Gulliver’s Travels is rotten- plain and simple. It is assembly line fodder of the most outright stupid kind, and nothing brings me more cheer at the end of 2010 than to see this film failing to make bank. Keep up the good work by staying at home, away from its awfulness, and 2011 will look a lot brighter.

Review in a very Hurry: Gulliver’s Travels http://gulliverstravel.info/, the unique novel, is about a whole great deal a lot more than just an island of tiny people today, but you’d never ever realize that from watching this. At first much more agreeable than expected, the Jack Black-starring update of the 1st quarter or so of Jonathan Swift’s classic satire falls totally apart with the conclusion.
