There have been scores of songs about women, from Waltzing Matilda to Sting’s classic Roxanne. There have been scads of songs about cars, from Surrey with the Fringe on Top to the Beach Boys’ Little Deuce Coupe. There have even been songs about animals. Everything from the Old Gray Mare Ain’t What She Used to Be to Me and You and a Dog named Blue.

But how many songs are there about household appliances? Not many, unless you count the telephone.

The telephone has been immortalized in songs by bluesmen, torch singers, rap stars and pop divas. It totally makes sense. Alexander Graham Bell’s instrument is musical by its very nature. The first prototype phone rang with a cacophony of bells and chimes. Today, people download a favorite Blacked-eyed Pea Grammy number for their personal ringtone. With the advent of the push button phone, telephone numbers actually beeped a 7 digit tune. My grandmother’s phone number was, oddly enough, Mary had a Little Lamb. No joke.

So let’s pause a beat and do our own musical tour of classic phone tunes.

The Blues

Let’s start at the beginning, down in the bayou. There, Mississippi Fred McDowell wrote a mournful song that has been covered by everyone from the Rolling Stones to Randy Travis. Jesus is on the Mainline. The song dates back to a time when people shared party lines and telephone eavesdropping was the closest thing a lonely heart had to an Internet chat room. Jesus in the song famously is on the “mainline.” No waiting required. Call him up and tell him what you want. That quick. That easy.

Swing.

Moving into the war years, Glen Miller and his Orchestra lit up the 40’s with a swinging big band number about a phone number. Pennsylvania 6-5000. Back in the day when phone numbers still had letters. Nostalgic, huh?

Rockabilly

Phasing into the 1960’s, Chuck Berry wrote a song that rose to the top of the charts about a tortured soul playing phone tag with a six-year-old. The lyrical lament was sung by Johnny Rivers. “Long distance information, give me Memphis, Tennessee…Marie is only six years old, information please, try and put her through to me in Memphis, Tennessee.” You want to cry, right?

Top 40

In the 70’s, Blondie’s Debra Harry beckoned us to call her anytime day or night. Operators are standing by. A decade before, British pop singer Petula Clark delivered the same siren call. “Maybe it’s late,” her song goes “but just call me. Call me and I’ll be around.”

Classic Rock

Bands like Steely Dan warned Rikki not to lose that number. And Glen Campbell reminded us that Wichita Lineman was still on the line. When is that guy gonna get off? The rest of us need to make a call.

Comedy

The phone was even featured in many comedy albums. Most notably, comedian Bob Newhart launched his career with an album that featured a one-sided phone call between himself and Sir Walter Raleigh. A decade later, novelty songstress Meri Wilson sang a bawdy ditty called Telephone Man, full of more double entendres than an Irish limerick.

Country

These days, country artist Toby Keith sings about a trip to Mexico, where his time is neatly divided between Tequila and telephone calls.

Indie

Indie band Lemon Sun continues the trend asking the musical question Telephone, are You Alive? That’s pretty much the extent of the lyrics. Very post-modern. Very deep.

R&B

Today, pop divas Beyonce and Lady Gaga tag team a tune called simply, Telephone. Lady Gaga explains the deeper meaning, “That’s my fear – that the phones ringing and my heads ringing. Whether it’s a telephone or it’s just the thoughts in your head, that’s another fear.” Lady Gaga is afraid of telephones. Who knew? And hey, would Beyonce please answer her head! It’s about to ring off her shoulders.

So the next time you use your phone, show a little respect. After all, when was the last time someone wrote a song about you?

Jets, an anti-Bush dark pop/rock anti-war song by Mick Star which combines actual Bush speeches with the music and song lyrics in an interesting and poignant way, has been banned on American radio as a result of White House tactics to hold back funding from private, public and college radio stations across America that play Jets.

Record producers, record companies and rock bands that are currently touring America have been ordered to honor the White House blacklisting of Mick Star and Jets or they will be placed on the same Banned on America radio blacklist. With the help of Clear Channel and other American owned and Republican Party run radio station monoliths, these rovian tactics have proven effective. The American music community has turned a deaf ear to the most dramatic anti-Bush pop/rock song ever written and produced by an American citizen.

Why is the White House afraid of Jets? Mick Star, a recluse rock poet says it’s rather simple. Jets features George Bush himself declaring victory, taunting the world and committing other people’s money and lives to his arrogantly blind vision. Mick Star says Jets is a song that wrote itself.

As recluse rock poets go, Mick Star has little money. But Mick Star has a passion for the truth and Mick Star has a lap top computer. Mick Star travels the internet and he has taken Jets to Canada, England, Europe and South America knowing the truth will eventually override the Rovian grip of American radio. Mick Star invites you to visit his web site to listen to and download Jets for free.

Jets is a song about the Jets that land at Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Delaware, USA, bearing the dead American soldiers from Iraq. The White House maintains a rovian grip on any and all press releases from Dover. Mick Star and Jets will break the rovian grip on America’s conscious.

Now that the death toll of American soldiers in Iraq has surpassed 3000, and there is talk of increased American troop presence in Iraq, there is renewed interest in the song Jets. While Mick Star continues to promote all of his music in the Philadelphia underground music circuit, Jets is the single song that Star believes will launch his career from an obscure Philadelphia-based writer to eventual stardom as the American public becomes increasingly dismayed by the Bush administration and its Iraq policies.

“If there’s some way that my simple little song gets somebody to listen, then I’ve done my job,” said Star. “That’s worth more to me than any amount of record sales.”

Jets is not the first of Mick Star’s hits. His life can be divided into four primary chapters that begin with “Songs from the Highfield,” then moves on to “The Boston University Years,” “iving with Ann Marie in Philadelphia,” and “Futures Passing.” Clearly an artist with the talent and conviction of Mick Star will continue to rock the American underground music scene.

Free ringtones never really seem to be free. You can sample up a storm on the mp3 ringtones and the polyphonic ringtones. Wallpapers, ringtone rippers and complimentary access to unlimited ringtones, no subscription required! Then in plain sight at the bottom of the page listing your favorite songs, it gives you the pricing for your monthly subscription. Where is the free that was promised? You can get several ringtones for nothing from the company providing your phone. But when searching for new and popular ringtones, the three-dollar-a-pop price tag from your company and from magazines turns you off. With a little time invested, you can score those ringtone freebies.

Unpaid bloggers and forum users will give you a free ride on their homemade ringtones. If you are a fan of classical music, those songs are free of copyright and are easier to get a hold of for ringtones. The National Anthem falls under the same reasoning and should be gratis. If you like a certain kind of offbeat ringtone, you are more likely to find a website that has that genre for free. Movie music, anime ringtones and/or cartoon ringtones have a good little fan base you can work with. It’s when you start looking for ringtone handouts on top 40 music, regardless of genre, that it gets sticky. The older or the stranger the ringtone, the more likely it is to be free.

There are genuine sites out there that have thousands of free ringtones. There is a look to the sites that are going to stick it to you that you’ll need to be familiar with. If the homepage is trumpeting the unlimited downloads from thousands of artists, albums and genres but then has the bottom of the page covered in small print, skip it. If the page starts out asking for your mobile number, or your email address so they can send your amazing free ringtones membership materials out to you, skip it. When you do get that confirmation email, you’ll click to activate your membership and you can count on being added to the “Sell my information to a third party” list – for free!

Depending on the phone you have, you should be able to store between 1 and 5 ringtones. So having the option of downloading them on your computer and then transferring them later is the way to go. That also saves you time and precious minutes using your phone to access the websites to download the ringtones, making them not so free.

When using your phone to get free ringtone content, you will need to have a phone that is compatible with wireless content downloads. Your phone will need to have GPRS turned on. GPRS lets your phone start a wireless connection to download your ringtones. For monophonic ringtones you only need text messaging service
