Ringtones the multibillion dollar business

Yet another year’s growth in the mobile ringtone market has confirmed its position as a major force in the music industry.

Once considered a passing craze, ringtones now account for more than 10% of the global music market and are overtaking CD sales sooner than expected. Few thought that the monophonic tones of the late 1990s would evolve into the multi-billion dollar market that exists today. But, following the advent of true polyphonic ringtones in 2003, the realisation of their potential has developed a fresh momentum.

Unable to ignore the ringtone market, the music business has come to embrace its future and its influence on youth culture. This is especially true of the hip-hop industry whose output makes-up more than half of all downloaded ringtones. Successful artists such as 50 Cent, Mariah Carey and Kanye West have all learnt that ringtones are by no means a niche product. To hear the latest from the mobile ringtone charts visit Ringtones.lt

If there is a key to this success then it is probably the creation of a ‘total product’, that is, the full customisation of phones with ringtones, wallpapers, screensavers, logos, picture messages and games. This has led to huge consumer choice and demand, with endless catalogues of music and themes now available on both mono and polyphonic phones. Another factor has been the obvious media impact, with the likes of the infamous Crazy Frog ringtone experiencing unprecedented coverage.

This popularity should continue for a while yet, thanks to advances in sound quality and the use of MP3 and Real Music by the current generation of phones. There are still new markets to explore as well, with the music-loving Latin Americans expected provide the next big growth area.

Ultimately, the long term success of the ringtone market could depend on the ability of the major phone manufacturers like Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Samsung to combine the very latest technology with wide-ranging compatibility; a balance which is becoming increasingly important in this truly global industry.

Guide to Cell Phone Ringtones

Ringtones for cell phones are a huge business. The majority of cell phone owners have a number of ringtones that they can choose from that come supplied with their cell phone. This enables everyone to personalize the sounds that their phone emits when they receive a phone call or a text message on their phone. However, many people do not like, or get bored quickly with these ringtones and look for something a little more interesting.

Computers and the internet in particular have led to an explosion in the complexity and availability of the latest ringtones. There are many companies that advertise ringtones that a person can download for use on their phone. Some of these ringtones have a one-off charge for downloading them, but many are part of a subscription service where the person is able to receive a number of different ring tones each week or month.

The latest chart hits are the most commonly downloaded cell phone ringtones, and the trendiest kids are constantly changing them to ensure that they have the top songs signaling a phone call. It doesn’t stop there – there has been an explosion in the number of specifically designed songs created solely for ringtones. This was the situation with the Crazy Frog ringtone. Ironically, this became so popular that it was actually released as a normal music single and hit the top of the song charts in a number of countries. It also received the ward from many people as the most annoying ringtone ever!

There are software programs that allow you to create your own cell phone ringtone from any audio file. These don’t have to be particularly melodic anymore, and a lot of catchphrases from popular TV shows have become cell phone ringtones.

Cell phone ringtones have been debated by many consumer groups who feel that their annoyance levels far outweigh their usefulness, particularly as the majority of cell phones have a vibrating function to silently alert the owner of an incoming call or message. This has proved such an issue that there are a large number of restaurants, and bars that actually fine people if their cell phone ringtone is heard by other people. These fines are often donated to charity so something good can come out of the annoying noise!

Ring-A-Ding Of The Crazy Frog!

The ‘Crazy Frog Ringtone’ phenomenon has caught a fancy among an audience wider than anyone could have ever imagined. The ‘Jollyphonic Dingtone’ with its amphibian protagonist ruled the ringtone market for a long time…Popular still the crazy frog fan club has only been making additions throughout its journey from Germany to the rest of Europe, Japan, New Zealand and Australia.

The Crazy Frog ringtone was broadcasted for the first time on Belgian Television in mid 2004 and later the adverts moved all over the world. Based on the ‘Annoying Thing’ a computer animation created by Erik Wernquist, the motorbike riding crazy frog is also known for its outrageously irritating T.V. commercial. Ironically it generated an unusual liking among youngsters around the world. The ring tone held on to the top position of the U.K. singles charts for almost 3 weeks. The famous single Crazy frog using ‘Axel F’, (the theme Beverly Hills Cop) released by Jamster, the mobile content company that owns rights to it moved into the top slot in Britain and outsold Coldplay’s Speed of Sound. For the first time ever, a ring tone entered into a scuffle with full length tracks and won.

Research found that chocolate sales were declining in the U.K. for the first time in 50 years as teenagers spent their pocket on mobile phones and mobile ringtones. According to University of Birmingham sociologist Peter Webb, who has studied leisure consumption practices among teenagers, the success of the single reflects the growing trend for young people to spend more money on mobile phones and computers than music.

Research and Surveys also suggest that the famous ringtone owes its success to its unique selling point i.e. ‘Talk ability’. Most people adore the Crazy Frog but there are a few who detest the annoying creature.

Either you like the Crazy Frog or no, you cannot escape the fact that it is probably a first huge mobile ringtone phenomenon globally. It can be easily compared to a success of a blockbuster film. It also set a new trend and made mobile carriers and content developers to mull over development of content only for the mobile platform, and offer users an exclusive content offering.

Several content owners, brands and even television networks are flirting with the concept of developing properties specifically for the mobile platform. Already films have been first released on mobile before their theatrical release, artists have debuted their new albums in form of ringtones on mobile and even a television station has debuted on the mobile first.

Somewhere all these have been enthused by the phenomenal success if Crazy frog worldwide. It’s a number one case study on how mobile content can promote your property and even generate revenues.

Crazy frog is a testimony of the growing popularity of mobile content and quick adaptation to the medium by teenagers and young audience. But the mobile content and entertainment industry is keenly watching for the next big thing that would surpass Crazy Frog’s popularity.

Has The Crazy Frog Gone Psycho?

A mobile phone rings. You listen. It’s not an MP3 tune of the latest hit. Neither it is the tone that imitates the natural and man-made sounds you hear in a setting. You discern voices, but they’re not names tones nor are they famous lines from popular movies or TV series. If so, then this has to be it. This has to be the latest craze that they are talking about. It’s the Crazy Frog!!!

Crazy Frog will outdo its own current popularity with the release of new variations of ringtones that are ready to be played with the click of a button. In very simple steps — search, click to listen, and choose — you can download your own ringtone or send it to a friend.

This craze was launched in the United Kingdom in 2004 through the hit single “Axel F”, a re-mix by the German-based mobile phone content distributor, Jamba. It hit the waves and soon became the number one top hit list. Its success eventually and easily spread to Australia and the rest of Europe. What makes this frog crazy is actually the sound imitating that of a two-stroke moped engine. From this simple motor sound, Crazy Frog has explored other sound effects or even music and continues to do so. This frog is growing.

Search from amongst its psycho variations as the Crazy Frog interprets songs for the kids, the rock metal enthusiasts, and other themes in English and selected European languages. Each ringtone is loud, not in the decibel sense of the word, but in its persistent blabbing. Yet at the same time, the tunes are catchy, upbeat, and bubbly that no one would surely miss it.

As you listen to Crazy Frog mimicking the ringing sound of a phone (Ring! Ring!), singing a rap, or motor racing, you would just shake your head and grin. You’d ask yourself, ‘What’s that again?’ So you’d click on the button to listen again. And again. It’s oddly distracting yet incredibly humorous. Crazy frog calls your attention either by annoying you, or amusing you. That’s why it’s called Crazy Frog!

If you’re one of those hooked in this trend, there’s no need to fret or brood over your existing mobile if it’s not a recently released model. Crazy frog plays for a long list of models of Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Sagem, Siemens, Sharp, Samsung, Panasonic and LG Mobile. Crazy Frog covers not only Europe and Australia, but the United States and Asia as well. In fact, an assortment of tones is available for the various service providers available in these countries. Crazy Frog is going global!

Really, this Crazy Frog has been keenly observing, listening to the throbs of the public and now its offering ringtones that drive you crazy. Are you ready for it? Be amused. Amuse others. Check out all the new crazy frog ringtones, for nothing written here compares to the fun and madness when you actually hear what this amusingly crazy amphibian is croaking about. Croak! Croak!
