The Top Selling Mastertone and Polyphonic Ringtones of 2006

Akon’s “Smack That” was the top selling ringtone of 2006, according to Nielsen Mobile.

2006 should be known in the ringtone world as the year that Mastertones took control of the market. Mastertones are the latest evolution in the ringtone industry. Put simply, Mastertones are the original songs that play on the cell phone in the same way that they do on the radio. This differs from the older ringtone version polyphonics which are a musical recreation of the popular song with no lyrics.

Another enhancement in the ringtone industry for 2006 is the movement of Mastertones away from re-makes by less popular bands as opposed to the more popular orginal artists. More often than not, in the past, some buyers were less satisfied when the ringtone they purchased featured singing by “49 Cent” instead of 50 Cent. Clearly, the record labels have seen the lucrative financial opportunities in offering the original artist songs in ringtone format.

Interestingly, obtaining radio play for a song does not guarantee its success as a ringtone. Mary J. Blige’s “Be Without You” was the most played song on the radio in 2006, but it didn’t crack the top 10 ringtones chart. In fact, none of the top 10 most played songs show up on the top 10 ringtones chart. Clearly, cell phone users have different criteria for what they want to hear when their phone rings than what they listen to on the radio.

The same situation holds true for artists. Nickelback was the most played band on the radio this year, but not a single Nickelback tune made it onto the ringtone charts. Country artists like Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, and George Strait were in the top 10 in terms of artist airplay, but none of them were popular in the ringtone format which is dominated by hip-hop.

Still, some good old tunes consistently make their way into the polyphonic ringtone charts. The Pink Panther, Mission Impossible, and Halloween theme songs have been regulars for many years on the top 10 polyphonic ringtone charts. Theme songs are ideal in polyphonic format and don’t translate as well to Mastertones where the sound is essentially the same since there are no lyrics.

Here’s the complete list of US ringtone sales for 2006. The ringtones are broken down by the two most popular formats–mastertones and polyphonics.

Tired of having the same ol’ standard ringtones for your iPhone? Tired of having to pay for ringtones with limited selections? Well check this out: Okay this may sound like it’s hard but it’s really really easy and it’ll save you a butt-load of money! Here are the steps; 1. Pick a song you want as your ringtone *(you can’t use a song with the DRM or whatever it’s called, so that means is that you can’t use a song you bought from iTunes. But you can use songs you’ve ripped of mp3’s you’ve Legally* downloaded). 2. Pick any portion of the song you want but remember it can’t be longer than 40 seconds. Write down when that portion starts and when it ends. 3. Highlight that song and right-click to the “get info” tabb. Then go to the options tab in that same window and check the boxes that say start and end times. Here is where you use the times you’ve written down. 4. Click okay, then make sure that same song is highlighted and then go the advanced tab up top. Click on the “Create AAC version.” (This creates the same song but it’s only as long as the length you set it to). 5. Find the new version of your song and drag it to your desktop. Go back and delete the ACC version of your song because you won’t need it anymore and change the start and end settings back to normal of the original song. 6. rename the extension from “songname.m4a” to “songname.m4r” (all your doing is just changing the last letter from a to r). Your computer may say “are you sure” YEAH YOU’RE SURE! 7. Almost

Crazy Frog Ringtone-Ring-A-Ding Of The Crazy Frog!

Posted on 21 June 2010 by

Ring-A-Ding Of The Crazy Frog!

The ‘Crazy Frog Ringtone’ phenomenon has caught a fancy among an audience wider than anyone could have ever imagined. The ‘Jollyphonic Dingtone’ with its amphibian protagonist ruled the ringtone market for a long time…Popular still the crazy frog fan club has only been making additions throughout its journey from Germany to the rest of Europe, Japan, New Zealand and Australia.

The Crazy Frog ringtone was broadcasted for the first time on Belgian Television in mid 2004 and later the adverts moved all over the world. Based on the ‘Annoying Thing’ a computer animation created by Erik Wernquist, the motorbike riding crazy frog is also known for its outrageously irritating T.V. commercial. Ironically it generated an unusual liking among youngsters around the world. The ring tone held on to the top position of the U.K. singles charts for almost 3 weeks. The famous single Crazy frog using ‘Axel F’, (the theme Beverly Hills Cop) released by Jamster, the mobile content company that owns rights to it moved into the top slot in Britain and outsold Coldplay’s Speed of Sound. For the first time ever, a ring tone entered into a scuffle with full length tracks and won.

Research found that chocolate sales were declining in the U.K. for the first time in 50 years as teenagers spent their pocket on mobile phones and mobile ringtones. According to University of Birmingham sociologist Peter Webb, who has studied leisure consumption practices among teenagers, the success of the single reflects the growing trend for young people to spend more money on mobile phones and computers than music.

Research and Surveys also suggest that the famous ringtone owes its success to its unique selling point i.e. ‘Talk ability’. Most people adore the Crazy Frog but there are a few who detest the annoying creature.

Either you like the Crazy Frog or no, you cannot escape the fact that it is probably a first huge mobile ringtone phenomenon globally. It can be easily compared to a success of a blockbuster film. It also set a new trend and made mobile carriers and content developers to mull over development of content only for the mobile platform, and offer users an exclusive content offering.

Several content owners, brands and even television networks are flirting with the concept of developing properties specifically for the mobile platform. Already films have been first released on mobile before their theatrical release, artists have debuted their new albums in form of ringtones on mobile and even a television station has debuted on the mobile first.

Somewhere all these have been enthused by the phenomenal success if Crazy frog worldwide. It’s a number one case study on how mobile content can promote your property and even generate revenues.

Crazy frog is a testimony of the growing popularity of mobile content and quick adaptation to the medium by teenagers and young audience. But the mobile content and entertainment industry is keenly watching for the next big thing that would surpass Crazy Frog’s popularity.
